What is Service Line Coverage?
Do I need service line coverage on top of my homeowners insurance?
Learn why service line coverage is an important addition to your homeowners policy.
We often don’t think about the many lines buried under the ground that provide various utilities into our house. However, if one of these lines breaks, you can be left without a critical service that you use every day, and a bill for thousands of dollars. By adding service line coverage to your homeowners policy you can hopefully avoid that cost!
Why do I need service line coverage?
Service line coverage can help to cover the costs of repairing damaged service lines and pipes that you are legally responsible for. Depending on the particular plan, you may have coverage for the following types of service lines coming into your property: Gas, Electrical Wiring, Water, Sewer, Cable, Internet, and Power.
What types of things are covered?
Depending on the coverage provided by your policy this coverage could provide protection against a leak, break, tear, rupture, collapse or arcing of a service line caused by:
– Collapse (not including a collapse caused by a sinkhole or subsidence)
– Electrical and mechanical or pressure systems breakdown
– Rust or other corrosion, decay, deterioration, hidden or latent defect
– Wear and tear
Even if you have a policy with your local utility company to cover one of your service lines, this coverage might be a better option because it covers more than just one of your utility lines.
Is it expensive?
This coverage is not expensive. Depending on the coverage and limits you request it is often no more than $60 a year! Coverage limits up to $25,000 are often available.
